Google is celebrating the birthday of Google Fi today, so that means a super deal on its newest phones, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. As long as you are interested in activating either phone on Fi service, you can save 50%.
The deal appears to be pretty straight-forward, from what I can tell. The Pixel 3 (review) or Pixel 3 XL (review) with 64GB or 128GB storage are 50% off in any color. That means a Pixel 3 in your pocket for as little as $399 or a Pixel 3 XL for as little as $449. New and existing customers are eligible.
The biggest catch, if there is one, appears to be an activation requirement. Once you order a Pixel 3 or 3 XL and receive the shipment confirmation email from Google, you have to activate on Google Fi within 30 days or Google will charge you for the full amount of the phone. Google will let you buy the phone with a payment plan or at full retail and there don’t appear to be long, drawn out contract terms. See the full terms here.
So if I’m reading this right, you could buy a Pixel 3 or 3 XL at half off, activate for a single month on Fi, and then take the phone elsewhere with no extra hoops to jump through. This is a Pixel 3 from Google, so it’ll work on any other carrier. Am I missing something?
